Its a sign of how fast this technological shift is happening and the requirement for more control of the development, the data and the usage. OpenAI faces complaint to FTC that seeks investigation and suspension of ChatGPT releases

  • A new complaint to the Federal Trade Commission urges the agency to investigate OpenAI and suspend its commercial deployment of large language models such as ChatGPT.

  • The complaint, by the nonprofit research group Center for AI and Digital Policy, accuses OpenAI of violating a part of the FTC Act that prohibits unfair and deceptive business practices, and the agency’s guidance for AI products.

  • CAIDP President Marc Rotenberg signed onto a widely circulated open letter that called for a pause of at least 6 months on “the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT4.”

• Italy’s data regulator issued an emergency decision demanding OpenAI to stop using the personal information of millions of Italians that’s included in GPT-3 and ChatGPT's training data.

• Data regulators from other countries, including France, Germany, and Ireland have contacted the Italian regulator for information regarding its findings.

• The action highlights privacy tensions around the creation of large AI models often trained on vast amounts of internet data.

• OpenAI's privacy policy relies upon "legitimate interests" when it comes to developing services, but GPT-4's technical paper says publicly available personal information is part of its training data.
