The UK will spend £100 million to develop its own 'sovereign' AI

• The UK government established a Foundation Model Taskforce with an initial £100 million (about $124.5 million) to develop AI technology that can make the country "globally competitive".

• The taskforce will report directly to the Prime Minister and Technology Secretary and will have a chairperson announced this summer.

• With roughly £900 million ($1.1 billion) in the UK budget devoted to an exascale supercomputer and dedicated AI research resources, officials hope for "sovereign"AI technology that spurs economic growth while avoiding ethical and technical pitfalls.

• Google's London-based DeepMind team currently produces cutting-edge AI research, while other systems are developed elsewhere - motivating the formation of the taskforce to keep British AI relevant on a global scale.

Russia's Sberbank releases ChatGPT rival GigaChat

• Sberbank (Russian state owned bank) released GigaChat, a rival to ChatGPT, as an invite-only testing mode.

• OpenAI's release of ChatGPT sparked a rush to develop AI chatbot technology.

• GigaChat stands out for its ability to communicate more intelligently in Russian than other foreign neural networks.

• Sberbank has invested heavily in tech in recent years due to the increased sanctions imposed on Russia by Western nations.

AI app Petey uses ChatGPT to make Apple Music playlists for you

• Petey, a mobile app introducing ChatGPT to Apple Watch users, now allows users to access its AI assistant more quickly and swap out Siri with Petey using Apple’s Shortcuts.

• The latest update to the app allows users to connect it to Apple Music and make playlists or add individual songs to their Apple Music Library.

• Additional updates include paid “Petey Premium” subscription access to GPT-4, alternative app icons, other payment options for Basic subscriptions, and the ability to send messages from Apple Watch without requiring a subscription or API key.

• Its had 24.7K total installs since launch on March 8 with the iPhone version available since April 6.
