📰 The latest AI News stories (as a 2 min read)

OpenAI releases third version of DALL-E

  • OpenAI has unveiled DALL-E 3, an advanced version of its generative AI visual art platform, which now integrates with ChatGPT allowing users to create prompts more easily, and also offers improved context understanding and more safety options to prevent the creation of inappropriate images.

  • DALL-E 3 will initially be available to ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Enterprise users, with access for research labs and API service to follow, but a release date for a free public version has not been confirmed.

  • Artists can opt their art out of future versions of DALL-E, avoiding the replication of copyrighted works and preventing potential legal disputes; this is in response to previous instances where creators sued DALL-E’s competitors for using their copyrighted work.

Franzen, Grisham and Other Prominent Authors Sue OpenAI

  • More than a dozen renowned authors, including John Grisham, Jonathan Franzen, and Elin Hilderbrand, have united with the Authors Guild to file a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of copyright infringement, claiming that their works were used without permission to train ChatGPT, resulting in derivative works that mimic and summarize the authors' books.

  • The lawsuit, lodged in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, intensifies the ongoing debate about AI’s impact on creative industries and the legality of using copyrighted materials in training AI models, with the authors neither notified nor compensated by OpenAI for the use of their works.

  • OpenAI, which has received considerable investment from Microsoft, is contending with increasing legal scrutiny as more authors and publishers try to curb AI's growing influence and the rise of AI-generated books, underscoring broader concerns about AI’s intrusion into creative and literary realms.

Amazon gives Alexa an AI facelift as it launches new smart speakers

  • Amazon has introduced a refined version of its Alexa voice assistant, touted as “smarter and more conversational,” featuring generative AI, to enhance its stance in the tech industry’s competitive AI landscape.

  • The enhanced Alexa, previewed at Amazon's annual devices event, will have a more human-like voice and can engage in more natural conversations without the need for a wake word, learning from each interaction and even composing messages on behalf of users.

  • The company has also released new hardware including the Echo Show 8 smart speaker, designed with computer vision to alter its display based on the user's location in a room, and showcased advanced AI applications to optimize smart home operations through more conversational requests.

  • A new feature, Map View, coming to the Alexa App and Echo Hubs will offer a digital floor plan of users' homes, simplifying smart device management and potentially supplying valuable user data to Amazon, though this is opt-in and users can delete the data at any time.
