Google DeepMind's New Tool Predicts Genetic Disease-Causing Variants with 90% Accuracy

  • Žiga Avsec, once a physics student, collaborates with Google DeepMind on "AlphaMissense", a machine learning tool designed to identify and assess genetic mutations known as missense variants that could cause diseases.

  • Out of 71 million possible missense variants, only 4 million have been identified in humans. Traditionally, just 2% have been categorized as either harmful or benign, but this tool expedites the evaluation process with 90% accuracy.

  • While the new tool accelerates research into genetic diseases and helps in rapid diagnoses, experts emphasize its use as a guide rather than a definitive answer. The technology showcases AI's growing potential in the vast field of biology.

38TB of data accidentally exposed by Microsoft AI researchers

  • Microsoft’s AI research team, while publishing a bucket of open-source training data on GitHub, accidentally exposed 38 terabytes of additional private data — including a disk backup of two employees’ workstations.

  • The backup includes secrets, private keys, passwords, and over 30,000 internal Microsoft Teams messages.

  • The researchers shared their files using an Azure feature called SAS tokens, which allows you to share data from Azure Storage accounts.

  • The access level can be limited to specific files only; however, in this case, the link was configured to share the entire storage account — including another 38TB of private files.

Edsoma Raises $2.5M with NBA Star Shaquille O'Neal's Support; Aims to Revolutionize Child Literacy

  • Edsoma, an AI-driven reading and communication platform for kids, secures $2.5 million in seed funding, valuing the company at $14 million post-funding. Notably, basketball legend and philanthropist Shaquille O’Neal leads the investment, marking his first foray into edtech.

  • The Edsoma app, available on both Google Play and Apple App stores, offers an AI reading assistant to boost reading and communication skills. Subscription plans vary, with a yearly membership priced at $99.99 providing features such as unlimited books, group video calls, and peer reading sessions.

  • Demonstrating rapid growth, Edsoma's user base expanded from 300 to 9,000 within just two months. CEO Kyle Wallgren plans to launch a Series A funding round soon, targeting between $10 million and $15 million.
