G7 calls for adoption of international technical standards for AI

• G7 leaders announced the formation of the “Hiroshima AI Process” that will discuss issues attributing to generative AI tools, such as intellectual property rights and disinformation.

• The European Union is close to passing legislation to regulate AI and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is advocating for accurate, reliable, safe, non-discriminatory AI systems.

• OpenAI CEO Sam Altman suggested regulation of AI that includes licensing and testing requirements as well as giving companies the right to say they do not want their data used for training.

Artificial intelligence gives real boost to US stock market

• Recent advances in artificial intelligence have boosted the S&P 500's 9% rally this year, with five stocks - Microsoft, Alphabet, Nvidia, Apple and Meta Platforms – accounting for the entire return.

• An analysis showed that removing AI-related stocks from the S&P 500 would reduce the index's performance by roughly 10 percentage points.

• Goldman Sachs strategists estimate that AI could create productivity gains leading to 4 percentage point profit margin expansion in a decade.

• The AI excitement has driven hefty stock gains; Microsoft is up 32% and Nvidia has soared 110%.

• Despite being potentially transformative technologies that are viewed as safety plays, these stocks are vulnerable to price bubbles as seen in the late 1990s dotcom boom and bust.

Artificial Intelligence Catalyzes Gene Activation Research and Uncovers Rare DNA Sequences

• Researchers at the University of California San Diego used machine learning (AI) to identify a downstream core promoter region (DPR), a “gateway” DNA activation code that’s involved in the operation of up to a third of our genes.

• Subsequently, they used AI to identify “synthetic extreme” DNA sequences with specifically designed functions in gene activation.

• They tested millions of different DNA sequences through machine learning by comparing the DPR gene activation element in humans versus fruit flies (Drosophila).

• By using AI, they were able to find rare, custom-tailored sequences for gene activation that could be useful in biotechnology and medicine.

• This method should have practical applications in biotechnology and biomedical research, according to Professor James T. Kadonaga.
