📰 3 Of the latest AI news updates summarized
‘Godfather of A.I.’ leaves Google after a decade to warn society of technology he’s touted
• Geoffrey Hinton, known as "The Godfather of AI," received his PhD in artificial intelligence 45 years ago and has since been an important voice in the field.
• For the past decade, Hinton worked part time at Google between its Silicon Valley headquarters and Toronto.
• He recently quit to warn the world about the potential threat of AI, saying it's coming sooner than he had previously thought.
• He regrets his life's work due to AI taking jobs and the proliferation of fake photos, videos, and text that appear real.
• He believes digital intelligences are very different from biological intelligences, citing GPT-4 as proof.
OpenAI raises $300m at over $27bn valuation
• OpenAI, has raised roughly $300m in funding at a valuation of between $27bn and $29bn.
• Venture capitalists such as Tiger Global, Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive, K2 Global and Founders Fund are involved in this investment.
• Microsoft previously invested around $10bn; its decision was both for financial support and strategic integration across several business units.
• Over 30% of OpenAI is now controlled by outside investors such as Peter Thiel, Sequoia, A16Z and Tiger Global.
Lets lighten the mood … Tinder’s verification process will now use AI and video selfies
• Tinder is rolling out an AI-powered update to its Photo Verification feature, requiring users to take a video selfie instead of photos.
• The upgrade will also allow users to restrict their chats to individuals who are Photo Verified.
• The feature aims to make the app safer by using technology to create fake photos and personas, as well as providing a “liveness” check in the form of a video selfie.
• To become verified, users must complete video prompts that match the person in their profile picture.
• Features such as filtering "Likes" page for photo verified members, and restricting messages only to those who are photo verified will be rolled out in the coming months.
• Photo verification has been proven to increase matches on Tinder as it adds assurance that potential matches are real people with profile pictures that reflect their appearance accurately.
