Google launches Pixel 8, smartwatch with new AI feature

  • Google launched the Pixel 8 smartphone and Pixel Watch 2, both of which integrate AI technology more deeply into the company's consumer gadgets.

  • The Pixel 8 is powered by the new Tensor G3 chip, which has more AI and machine learning capabilities.

  • The AI features can help with photography, summarizing web pages, and blocking out spam calls.

  • The Pixel Watch 2 gets a digital crown and advanced health tracking features powered by AI.

Microsoft’s OpenAI Stake Worth $100 Billion

  • Oppenheimer analyst Timothy Horan believes that Microsoft's stake in OpenAI could be worth $100 billion, based on current fundraising rounds for AI start-ups.

  • He notes that AI start-up Anthropic is reported to be looking for further investment at a valuation of between $20 billion and $30 billion, even though it has an estimated annualized revenue rate of around $100 million.

  • He also notes that OpenAI is reported to be in talks with investors about a potential sale of shares at a valuation of between $80 billion and $90 billion.

  • Horan believes that these valuations validate the potential value of Microsoft's OpenAI stake and its ChatGPT technology in the face of a multiplying number of AI models.

ChatGPT-owner OpenAI is exploring making its own AI chips

  • The company has been evaluating various options to solve the shortage of expensive AI chips that it relies on.

  • These options have included building its own AI chip, working more closely with other chipmakers including Nvidia, and also diversifying its suppliers beyond Nvidia.

  • OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has made the acquisition of more AI chips a top priority for the company.

  • An effort to develop its own AI chips would put OpenAI among a small group of large tech players such as Alphabets Google and Amazon.com that have sought to take control over designing the chips that are fundamental to their businesses.
