• Amazon's cloud unit has allocated $100 million for a center to help companies use generative artificial intelligence.

• Amazon is adding data scientists, engineers and solutions architects to the payroll.

• Microsoft and Google have had splashier entrances into generative AI, but Amazon has been drawing broadly on AI for years.

• Amazon is facing a challenge in meeting demand for AI chips, but CEO Adam Selipsky believes AI will be the next wave of innovation in the cloud.

CS50 Introduces AI to Revolutionize Computer Science Education

• CS50, Harvard's flagship coding course, will be integrating AI into its instruction this fall.

• AI will help students find bugs in their code, give feedback on program design, explain unfamiliar code, and answer individual questions.

• AI will also be used in the edX version of the course, and course staff hope it will reduce the time they spend grading.

• Students will be encouraged to think critically when taking in information from humans or software, and feedback from students and teachers will help improve the AI programs.

Law Firm Fined $5,000 for Submitting Fake Legal Citations Generated by Chatbot

• A US judge has fined two lawyers and a law firm $5,000 (£3,935) after fake citations generated by ChatGPT were submitted in a court filing.

• The judge P Kevin Castel said in a written opinion there was nothing “inherently improper” about using artificial intelligence for assisting in legal work, but lawyers had to ensure their filings were accurate.

• ChatGPT had suggested several cases involving aviation mishaps that Schwartz had not been able to find through usual methods used at his law firm. Several of those cases were not real, misidentified judges or involved airlines that did not exist.

• In a separate written opinion, the judge threw out the underlying aviation claim, saying the statute of limitations had expired.
