Amazon quietly acquired audio content discovery engine Snackable AI to boost its podcast projects
• Amazon acquired Snackable AI to enhance its podcast features.
• The company was founded in 2018 and is specialized in creating structure and metadata for video and audio using AI-generated chapters, highlights, etc.
• Prime members can access podcasts without ads and 100 million songs on the music platform.
• The acquisition happened while other tech companies raced to implement AI-powered features into their products following OpenAI's ChatGPT launch.
• During the quarterly earnings call last month, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy revealed the company is building a more “generalized and capable” large language model (LLM) to power Alexa.
Microsoft is reportedly helping AMD expand into AI chips
• Microsoft and AMD are reportedly joining forces to compete against Nvidia’s domination in the AI processor market.
• Nvidia controls an estimated 80% of the AI processor market, making it difficult for companies like Microsoft to access its expensive GPUs.
• AMD is developing Instinct MI300 data center chips that could be adapted for generative AI workloads and has a complete portfolio of CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, adaptive SoCs, and DPUs for machine learning deployments.
• Microsoft is also developing its own in-house AI chip codenamed Athena with resources from its silicon division as well as partnering with Nvidia for its processors.
UK competition watchdog launches review of AI market
• The UK Competition and Markets Authority is reviewing the artificial intelligence market to ensure that competition is working effectively and consumers are being protected.
• The US Federal Trade Commission has warned companies to be careful when using AI technology, with CEOs from the industry meeting with US Vice President Kamala Harris to discuss product safety.
• The CMA’s review will gather information from businesses, academics and other stakeholders but will not target any particular companies.
• Slaughter and May lawyer Sarah Cardell has taken over as the regulator prepares to take on sweeping powers which will give them the power to tell the most powerful technology companies how to treat their customers and fine those who break its new rules up to 10 percent of turnover.
