Research reveals that chatbots can accurately infer sensitive personal information, such as race, location, and occupation, from seemingly innocuous conversations. This stems from the way AI models are trained on web content, making it challenging to prevent. Scammers could misuse this, and it raises concerns about data privacy and potential new advertising methods. Large language models can guess personal data with high accuracy, revealing an unexpected privacy issue.

AI in the legal field: Rapper Pras Michel is in Trouble

Rapper Pras Michel seeks a new trial, claiming his lawyer used an experimental AI program to write a deficient closing argument during his federal crimes trial. The AI tool, EyeLevelAI Lit Assist, was used in his defense and resulted in a frivolous closing argument that misattributed songs to the Fugees. Michel was convicted for a foreign influence campaign, but his new lawyers argue that the AI-generated defense harmed his case.

The Transparency Debate: Should AI Models be Open or Closed?

A new report from Stanford HAI assesses the transparency of prominent AI foundation models, such as Meta's Llama 2, BloomZ, and OpenAI's GPT-4. None of these models scored particularly high in disclosing information about their societal impact. The researchers used 100 indicators to evaluate the models' transparency, finding that none of the creators provided data on privacy, copyright, or bias concerns. The index aims to set benchmarks for government regulations and corporate transparency in the AI field. OpenAI's limited research disclosure was noted.
